About the Project

The former camp Perm-36 is the only Gulag museum in Russia, fighting against oblivion.

Since 2005 it is the home of the annual International Human Rights Forum Pilorama. In addition to Russian artists like rock musician Yuri Shevchuk and songwriter Juli Kim international guests give performances at Pilorama.

In summer 2011 the Berlin-based jazz singer Pascal von Wroblewsky followed an invitation.

Her son Robert accompanied her with his camera and collected impressions in the camp and during the concerts.

The days of their stay in the former Gulag resulted in a personal portrait of their work with the musicians, the concerts and the inspection of the camp.

Evelina Birjukova, director of „ERGO GmbH“, headmaster of the language school „Modo Vivere“, and program manager of Goethe Institute in Perm gave her a guided tour of the camp’s history.

In a painful way the fate of Evelina’s family is connected to Perm-36. Interviews with executive director of the museum of history of political repression „Perm-36“, Tatjana Kursina, and a former inmate of the camp „Perm-36“ (Special Unit), literary figure Vasil Ovsijenko, reveal the importance of Pilorama: A festival for the preservation of the past.
